About Mr. Whiddon

Mr. Whiddon was born and raised in Columbia, Maryland.  As a child, he attended Jeffer's Hill Elementary School and Owen Brown Middle School (both schools in the Howard County Public School System).  He then attended Mt. St. Joseph High School in Baltimore, Maryland.

Mr. Whiddon earned his Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Maryland, College Park where he studied Music Education and Elementary Education.  His primary instrument was piano and he studied under Santiago Rodriguez.  Mr. Whiddon also earned his Masters in Education Administration and Supervision from Johns Hopkins in 2009.

Mr. Whiddon has also completed post-graduate coursework through Trinity University, and the College of Notre Dame of Maryland.

Mr. Whiddon began playing the piano at age 6 and studied from first through twelfth grade with Constance Fischel.  Once Mr. Whiddon reached the fourth grade, he began his participation in the school band on the trumpet.  In the sixth grade he switched from trumpet to euphonium, which he played from that time through college.  Once he reached the University of Maryland, he performed on euphonium, trombone, trumpet, and piano in the University of Maryland Concert Band, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Marching Band, Basketball Pep Band, and Jazz Band under the direction of Professor John Wakefield, Dr. L. Richmond Sparks, and Chris Vadala.

After earning his degree from the University of Maryland, Mr. Whiddon served as Music Director at St. Mary's High School in Annapolis, Maryland, where he taught Concert Band, Jazz Band, Guitar, Choir, and Music Appreciation as well as serving as music director for the Drama department and music ministry director.

Mr. Whiddon was then hired by Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland where he worked as an elementary and middle school instrumental music teacher.  At this time, Mr. Whiddon also gave instrumental music lessons at the Hebrew Academy of Greater Washington in Silver Spring, Maryland.

After teaching in Montgomery County, Mr. Whiddon was hired by the Howard County Public School System in Maryland.  In Howard County, Mr. Whiddon taught at Elkridge Landing Middle School, directing the Symphonic Band, Concert Band, and Jazz Band.

Mr. Whiddon is currently the instrumental music teacher at Laurel Woods Elementary School in Howard County, a position he has held since 2003.  While at Laurel Woods, Mr. Whiddon has twice been nominated for the "Music & Arts Music Teacher Of the Year" award.  In addition to his responsibilites as a music teacher, Mr. Whiddon has served on the Cultural Arts Committee, been a member of the school-wide PBIS Team and the Restorative Justice Team, has served as the Team Leader for the Related Arts Team, has been a cooperating teacher for multiple student teachers and a mentor teacher for Instrumental Music teachers new to the profession.

Mr. Whiddon also currently plays with the Columbia Big Band and has played with the University of Maryland Alumni Marching Band and the University of Maryland Alumni Jazz Band.
